German Government Funds Solar Power Installation at Namatula Health Centre
The Federal Government of Germany, through the German Embassy in Dar es Salaam, has supported the installation of a solar photovoltaic system at Namatula Health Centre in Nachingwea District Council.
Namatula Health Centre, located in the Lindi Region, has been experiencing frequent electricity outages from the national grid, with power interruptions occurring on average once per day. These outages have negatively affected the delivery of essential health services, particularly maternity care.
To address this challenge, a solar photovoltaic system with a capacity of 4.96 kWp, 5 kVA/48V inverter, and 38 kWh battery storage has been installed. The system was implemented by the Tanzania Renewable Energy Association (TAREA) in collaboration with Nachingwea District Council to ensure a reliable power supply and promote safe motherhood services at the health centre.
The installed solar system is expected to benefit a total population of 5,259 people, comprising 2,512 males and 2,747 females.
To ensure long-term sustainability of the project, several measures have been put in place, including training end-users on proper operation and service of the solar photovoltaic system, the availability of a resident solar technician in Nachingwea, and the establishment of a maintenance fund.
The availability of reliable solar backup electricity will significantly improve the quality of maternity and other health services at Namatula Health Centre, thereby enhancing safe motherhood outcomes.
This initiative represents the second solar energy project financed by the German Government and implemented by TAREA in partnership with Nachingwea District Council. The first project involved the installation of a solar photovoltaic system at Matekwe Secondary School, which has contributed to improved student performance.
